This year, we're not just hosting a kite festival. We're engineering a collection of defining moments your family will remember for years.

The Science Behind the Magic

People Don't Remember Days.
They Remember Moments.

Research shows our brains don't record experiences like a video camera. We forget most of what happens and hold onto two things: the most emotionally intense moment (the Peak) and how the experience ended. This is the Peak-End Rule โ€” and it's the foundation of our entire action plan.

The Peak-End Rule

A 3-hour event is not remembered as 180 minutes of pleasantness. It's remembered by its highest high and how it felt when it was over. Our job is to stop leaving the peak and the end to chance โ€” and start building them deliberately.

The EPIC Plan

Every defining moment contains at least one of four elements. Each moment in our schedule is deliberately engineered to hit one or more.

Elevation
EElevation

Rise above the everyday.

Polaroid Keepsake (12:00 PM): As families arrive, a volunteer with a Polaroid camera takes a photo of every family in front of the official J-Town Kite Festival sign. Each family takes their portrait home โ€” a tangible keepsake from the very first festival.
Bubble & Kite Combo (1:00 PM): Bubbles fill the air while kids chase them and fly kites at the same time. Pure multi-sensory magic โ€” especially designed for the littlest flyers who may not be able to hold a kite alone yet.
Slow-Mo Derby (2:00 PM): Who can keep their kite in the air the longest while walking as slowly as possible? The slower you go, the better your chances โ€” toddlers finally have the home-field advantage.
Pride
PPride

Capture people at their best.

First Flight Certificates: For any child flying a kite for the very first time โ€” an official certificate with their name and the date. A tangible artifact of a personal milestone they'll keep.
Kite Kudos Patrol: Volunteers whose only job is to give specific, genuine praise. Not 'nice kite!' but 'I love how you two worked together to launch that!'
Caught in the Act Board: A display board at the entrance where Polaroid keepsakes and candid moments of teamwork, helpfulness, and joy are pinned throughout the day.
Insight
IInsight

Spark the 'aha!' moment.

The Grand Launch (12:30 PM): A countdown from 10 โ€” every kite lifts off at the exact same moment. Kids instantly discover that launching together is easier than launching alone. The crowd becomes the teacher.
Bubble Physics: During the Bubble & Kite Combo, kids naturally discover that bubbles and kites both need moving air to stay up. The same wind that flies the kite bursts the bubble โ€” a wordless lesson in aerodynamics.
The Slow-Mo Revelation: When kids slow down for the Slow-Mo Derby and their kite stays up longer, they feel the physics of lift in their hands. No explanation needed โ€” the discovery happens through play.
Connection
CConnection

Unite the community.

Arrive & Meet Neighbors (12:00 PM): The first 30 minutes are designed for meeting โ€” Polaroid keepsakes in front of the festival sign and open space create natural conversation between families who may never have spoken before.
Colors of J-Town (2:45 PM): Everyone flies close together to paint the sky as one community. A living, breathing sky mural made by the people of Jonestown โ€” together.
The Grand Descent (2:55 PM): Beautiful music plays as every family slowly reels in their kite at the same time. The shared, graceful ending turns strangers into neighbors who shared something real.
It's a Potluck!

What to Bring

This is a community event โ€” everyone brings something, everyone shares everything. Here's your checklist.

๐Ÿช

Your Kite

Any kite, any size, any shape. Don't have one? Grab a simple diamond kite โ€” they fly best!

๐Ÿ’ง

Water

It's Texas in April. Stay hydrated โ€” bring a water bottle for every member of your crew.

๐Ÿซง

Bubbles

We'll have bubbles at the Bubble & Kite Combo, but the more the merrier. Bring a bottle for the kids!

๐Ÿฒ

A Dish to Share

Potluck style! Bring your favorite dish, snack, or dessert to share with your new neighbors.

๐ŸŒŸ

No kite? No problem. Come anyway โ€” there will be plenty of kites in the sky to watch, bubbles to chase, food to share, and neighbors to meet.

The Most Important Moment

The Grand
Descent

At 2:55 PM, we announce The Grand Descent. Beautiful music plays as every family, at the same time, slowly reels in their kite. The coordinated, graceful descent of hundreds of kites is a stunning, definitive, and deeply memorable ending โ€” far more powerful than people just randomly packing up and leaving.
